Bowel movements are an automatic part of one’s day and not something that one really thinks about till something goes wrong. When there is no bowel movement one gets constipated. This has an adverse impact on one’s health. It can also cause other health problems that are related to it. The daily bowel movements by our bodies are to eliminate waste and toxins from the body. When this process is delayed, our body has to bear the ill effects of carrying this load of toxic waste within. Ti is not only uncomfortable but also very bad for one’s health.

Constipation
When a person has difficulty in passing bowel movements and is not able to pass motion easily or regularly, it is defined as constipation. The definition of a constipated person is one who does not pass motion more than thrice a week.

The reason for this blockage could be due to mechanical obstruction in the large intestine. More commonly it is due to poor dietary and lifestyle choices.

The most common reason for constipation is an extremely poor diet that contains little natural fiber. The over-dependence on highly processed and smooth foods has led to an increase in patients with constipation and other digestive issues. When one takes in plenty of natural fiber in the form of fresh fruit and vegetables in one’s diet there is enough fiber to make the passing of stools easier.

When the diet is poor and the person’s intake of water is also less, the problem is compounded. An over-reliance on carbonated drinks, coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages to quench one’s thirst leads to dehydration.

Leading an active lifestyle is important to maintain all bodily functions efficiently including digestion. Being very inactive and leading a sedentary lifestyle also leads to constipation. The problem is much worse when the person is confined to a bed or a chair.

A sudden change in routines due to travel or stress can also affect digestion and bowel movements.

Ignoring the urge to pass a bowel movement can make the problem worse.

When a person suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS they have problems that fluctuate between constipation and diarrhoea.

Sometimes hardened stool can block the colon. The hardened stool can also cause tears in the anus called a fissure or cause inflammation of the blood vessels in the area around the anus called symptomatic haemorrhoids (piles).

Increasing age slows the digestive process. Incidences of constipation are far higher in people who are older.

Mechanical issues with the colon can also cause constipation. Some examples are structural problems and blockages, hernias, diverticulitis, cancerous tumours, scar tissue formation and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
